Pastoralist leaders discuss NPR disarmament with Interior Ministry
The leadership of FCDC led by Governor Nanok and PPG members led by Hon. Aden Duale and Senator Kipchumba Murkomen met with the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Coordination and his senior security team at Harambee House.
The leaders shared their concerns about the current insecurity situation in the pastoralist areas of Kenya. The leaders who spoke at the meeting took issues with the rationale for the choice of strategy to disarm NPRs before briefing the leaders and putting in place adequate measures to safeguard the safety of the people and pastoralist properties in conflict-prone areas.
Following lengthy discussions, the following was agreed upon:
- Twelve (12)-member committee representing leaders from the pastoralist region need to formed to work with the national government especially the leaders of the security team with a view of restoring peace in the North Rift.
- Contingent measures will be put in place in hot spot and dangerous areas.
- Disarmament will be done in a way that will ensure that no security vacuum is left to compromise the safety of the citizens and especially the property of the pastoralists-livestock.
- The leaders and CS team promised to work together and ensure political support during the disarmament and vetting of NPRs in the frontier counties.
